Description
A striking piece of porcelain transformed by an extraordinary crystalline glaze, this vase is the result of five months of experimentation and development.
I wanted to create a glaze with a truly deep, dark background against which the crystalline growths could emerge with maximum intensity. This proved surprisingly challenging: the frits readily available in the UK would not produce the rich black ground I was looking for. After extensive experimentation with the glaze formulation, together with the firing schedule, I eventually achieved this dramatic depth of colour.
Against the dark, almost midnight-blue surface, luminous cobalt-blue crystals appear to bloom across the vase. Some form as delicate circular rosettes, while others merge into larger, layered structures, creating a constantly changing surface that rewards close inspection. Tiny crystalline details sit between the larger forms, adding further depth and complexity.
The result is a vase that feels almost geological—a little like looking into a mineral-rich rock formation, where intricate structures have formed naturally over time.
Handmade from fine porcelain, its elegant waisted form provides a refined contrast to the exuberance of the glaze. It is equally compelling displayed as a sculptural object or used to showcase a simple arrangement of flowers.
